ATIWAD & Romance 1600 Keynote Speaker

Eddie M. is one of the top saxophonists to emerge from the Bay Area, known for his authentic funk roots, dynamic stage presence, and soulful delivery. He has recorded and performed with Prince & The Revolution, Sheila E., Jill Jones, Beyoncé, Paula Abdul, and Stevie Nicks, Yolanda Adams, Wayman Tisdale, and Acoustic Alchemy. He was a member of the house band on The Magic Hour. Eddie’s solo releases include Hold Me (1997), Ward Street (1998), and Eddie M. (2001), which features Eric Benét and Karyn White.

Eddie M. laid down incredible saxophone parts on two tracks from Around the World in a Day, “The Ladder” and “Temptation,” and brought electrifying energy to the Purple Rain tour, often joining Prince and The Revolution on stage for “Baby, I’m a Star” and “Purple Rain.” He also shared the screen with Eric Leeds in the unforgettable video for “America,” an absolute standout from ATWIAD.

But that’s not all—Eddie M. is all over Sheila E.’s Romance 1600, performing on every track with the sole exception of “Yellow,” and helping to define the sound of beloved tracks like “A Love Bizarre” and “Dear Michaelangelo.”

Don’t miss this celebration of Eddie M.’s legacy and the musical magic he brought to Prince world.

Susannah Melvoin

The Family Keynote Speaker

Susannah Melvoin grew up in a Los Angeles-based musical family, the daughter of legendary composer, keyboardist, and long-time NARAS President Michael Melvoin. Singing from the age of 8, Susannah got her first taste of professional recordings as a jingle singer for television and radio. By her late teens, she was working as a session singer in Los Angeles by night, for David Geffen and MCA Publishing by day.

Some of her earliest sessions were alongside R&B star James Ingram, for the legendary Quincy Jones, who subsequently employed her as a staff singer and as a member of his newly created a-cappella group.

By 1983, she had come to the attention of then up-and-coming musician Prince via long-time friend Lisa Coleman, keyboard player in his backing band The Revolution. Blown away by Susannah’s impromptu version of Aretha’s “Until You Come Back To Me,” Prince became enamored with her voice and asked her to sing on the debut album from Apollonia 6 before enlisting her as co-lead vocalist for a new group called The Family, who would score a US Top 10 R&B hit with “Screams Of Passion.”

After the dissolution of The Family, Susannah joined twin sister Wendy as a member of the newly expanded Prince & The Revolution and contributed to numerous successful albums including Around The World In A Day (which also featured her late brother Jonathan), Parade, Sign O The Times, and The Black Album. Sign O The Times’ quirky “Starfish & Coffee” gave the public the first glimpse of Melvoin’s immense songwriting talents.

After leaving the “Prince camp,” publisher/producer Dick Rudolph (Minnie Ripperton, Teena Marie) signed Susannah to a development deal, but sadly a solo album was never released.

She worked in the studio and on the road with Wendy & Lisa on their debut album, co-writing the European hit single “Honeymoon Express” as well as subsequent releases Fruit At The Bottom and Eroica, before inking a publishing deal with Chrysalis Music.

Some of the artists to have recorded Susannah’s material include Madonna (Ray Of Light album), Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Arc Angels, Doyle Bramhall II, and UK pop outfit All Saints, who scored a massive hit with her song “Pure Shores,” one of the biggest-selling singles of 2000. During this period, the ever-creative performer tried her hand at acting and appeared in several critically acclaimed independent films.

Susannah’s resume also boasts projects, studio work, and/or live performances with Seal, Billy Idol, Donna Summer, Trevor Horn, Questlove, Erykah Badu, Tchad Blake, Mitchell Froom, William Orbit, Neil Finn (of Crowded House fame), UK dance outfit The Grid, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, and Chaka Khan.

Jellybean Johnson

Keynote Speaker

Jellybean Johnson is the drummer of the Prince-created band The Time. Jellybean is one of the architects of a unique blend of music that was created in Minnesota and called the Minneapolis Sound.

Jellybean’s resume includes drummer/guitarist/writer/engineer/producer for both local and national talent, including creating a number one pop song for Janet Jackson, “Black Cat.” Billboard’s Critic’s Picks ranked “Black Cat” as Janet Jackson’s best song of all time in 2017.

In 1980, Prince united members of Flyte Tyme, of which Jellybean was a member, and Grand Central to form the band, The Time. Jellybean has been their drummer ever since. The Time toured with Prince and went on to be the rival band in the film Purple Rain.

Prince also formed a band called The Family using Jellybean as its drummer yet again.

Jellybean also wrote, produced, and played on many songs by nationally known artists during his time at Flyte Tyme Studios in Minneapolis, including Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, New Edition, Alexander O’Neal, Mint Condition, and the Human League.

As a guitarist, Jellybean has lent his playing to many songs and recordings and plays nationally in the Blues circuit.

Locally, in the Twin Cities, you will see Jellybean most nights of the week sitting in with local artists and in his own band, The Jellybean Johnson Experience. The Jellybean Johnson Experience also presents several shows each year promoting and performing with up-and-coming bands and artists.

The Jellybean Johnson Experience put out a single in 2018 called “Put Some Jelly On It” and released another, “Let Me Shine On,” in 2019.

Jellybean is the recipient of twenty Gold and Platinum albums, Minnesota Music Awards, Minnesota Black Music Awards, and ASCAP Awards. In 2014, he was honored for his long-time work as a drummer with a special Local Legends Award.

Jellybean’s custom-made suit jacket that he wore in the film Purple Rain was donated to the Minnesota History Museum, securing his place in the history of Minneapolis music for all time.

Romance 1600 Live

Sheila E. as Bandleader and Feminist Icon

I’ll present highlights from the Sheila E.: Live Romance 1600 concert video and discuss how the work showcases her as a bandleader in the tradition of her renowned father and uncles, Pete and Coke Escovedo. I’ll also analyze how the concert exemplifies her trailblazing career as one of the few high-profile female singer-percussionists in the industry.

Chris Bournea (bor-NAY) is a writer and filmmaker based in Columbus, Ohio. He directed the documentary “Lady Wrestler: The Amazing, Untold Story of African-American Women in the Ring.” The documentary chronicles the accomplishments of trailblazing African-American women who integrated professional wrestling in the 1950s and ‘60s, such as Babs Wingo, Ethel Johnson, Marva Scott, Ramona Isbell and Kathleen Wimbley.

Bournea wrote and directed the feature film “Things Are Tough All Over,” a drama about a Chicago family struggling through the Great Recession of 2008. The movie will be released in 2025.

Bournea co-wrote the nonfiction book “All Jokes Aside,” which chronicles the famous Chicago comedy club of the same name. The club served as a star factory in the 1990s, launching the careers of famous comedians such as Ohioans Dave Chappelle and Steve Harvey, Mo’Nique, Chris Rock, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and many others.

Bournea is the author of the fiction series “The Chloe Chronicles,” about a young woman of color making her way in the cutthroat entertainment industry. He also wrote and directed the play “The Springtime of Our Lives,” a contemporary, urban take on Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet.”

Bournea is also a journalist who is currently a writer and editor for Ohio State News, The Ohio State University’s news site.

The Family Presentation

Time Runs Out... Family Steps Up

Digital media has provided many of us the opportunity to research and relive the past, particularly from 1983 into 1985. In 1983, the Purple Machine was in full stride. Prince’s 1999, The Time’s What Time Is It? and Vanity 6’s self-titled album were all hits and selling well. The Triple Threat Tour was scorching across the nation, powered in large part by The Time constantly upstaging Prince on the tour… I was there. The Rolling Stone magazine with the cover showing Prince and Vanity was the talk of the industry, all was good in the land of Purple…until it wasn’t. Defections, disagreements, firings and hirings, circumstances that led to the creation of… The Family. Like a comet, they burned hot and flamed out too soon…or did they?

Presently, I’m a Vice-Chair for the ABA Recording and Performing Arts division, a member of the Recording Academy San Francisco Chapter, a member of the Schwartz-Levi Chapter of the American Inns of Court, and a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar Association. The bulk of my law practice is in music industry transactions, which I LOVE. I’ll be renewing my NBA agent credentials in October. And I have applied to teach a music law course at King Hall, the UC Davis Law School.

Before starting college and after dropping out of high school, I was a roadie in the Bay Area, and among the acts I worked with were Journey and Santana. Music is “my thing” and other than a possible run for the judicial bench, I don’t see myself in any other areas of law.

When I’m not doing my thing in the legal world, I can be found dining at various Michelin-star restaurants or listening to my audiophile sound system and reading a music biography or a comic book. I’m a complex cat…
